A Tip For Friday: Contact Lenses

Patrick and I both wear contact lenses. He wears monthlies (and doesn't change them as often as he should!) and I wear dailies (100% worth the $$$ to me ;). We usually purchase our contacts from Wal-Mart, that was until I stumbled across a thread on the http://www.weddingbells.ca/ forum that I frequent about http://www.clearlycontacts.ca/ It is a Canadian company (which I think is based out of Vancouver?) where one can order their contacts online - at a great savings!

Of course the greater savings are found in bulk purchases, but I purchased one box (for each eye ;) of Focus Dailies still at a savings. Best of all they deliver directly to your door the next day (or your work…at any rate someone needs to sign for them) or a couple of days later via Canada Post (if you aren't home you can pick them up at your leisure at the local Canada Post).

Depending on your order, there are no shipping fees (mine was under $80 and had no shipping fees). Another thing about this site is that they will price match. So, I moseyed on over to http://www.discountcontactlenses.com/ and found my lenses for a slightly cheaper price. So I called Clearly Contacts and gave them the website (seriously took 2 seconds)…not only did they price match it, they beat it by 10%!

I saved around $50 and didn't have to wait a week for a telephone call saying that my contacts were in and I could pick them up. In the future it seems like Clearly Contacts will be getting my business! Two cheers for online shopping! Whoot! Whoot!

***Because you give you prescription online (and I'm not really sure how they verify that it is yours?) MAKE SURE you're using an up to date prescription - you only get one set of eyes!!!

Merry Belated Christmas!!! & 100th Post!

Well, the HamiHarri's sure were blessed again this Christmas…our family is seriously the most generous ever - THANK YOU!!!

We also wanted to give a special thanks to the Bratkowski's in Burnaby for having us over Christmas. Although, I'm not sure our waistlines thank you…we each gained about 5-8 pounds - eek! But it was well worth it to have such as yummy dinner with fabulous company.

Here is a link to some pictures of our Christmas event: http://queensu.facebook.com/album.php?aid=78355&l=17776&id=658325106

The Saturday before we left we checked out our new place…they have completed the foundation and have begun to put up wall - yippy! It is so much fun to go back each week and check out the development - we can't wait until May! We hope for lots of visitors (this includes you too Egg!!!).

Anyhoo…short post today because I have to head out shortly to get a police check for my new job :) Did I mention that I had a new fabulous PERMANENT job that I think I'm going to LOVE and that will likely turn into the beginning of my "career" - whoot! Whoot!

My last day at my current Ministry working as an Implementation Analyst will be January 4th - which is my flex day, so my last day here will really be the 3rd. I can't wait to get out of here! Not that I didn't enjoy my time here, but you know when you KNOW you will be moving on, you just want to, well, move on already.

My new job will be working as an Investigative Officer with a Ministry that I have had my eye on for quite some time. I will be given actually training and feedback (which is considerably lacking in my current position) as well as some constraints…at least I hope there will be some constraints. Some people really enjoy working within set parameters and limits…I am one of those people, at least at this point in my career ;) This will likely mean that I will only be blogging during my lunch or after work…but I can't wait!

There have also been a few surprises that have come along with this job offer. Originally I thought I would be making a few ks less than my current position (seeing how it is a different pay level) - which was one of the reasons we weren't sure if it would be a smart fiscal decision at this point in our lives (think wedding, new house, etc ;). However, it turns out that I will be getting a raise with this new job…lol…it is about $50 a month more…so not much - but still pretty exciting!!!

Another surprise about this job is my work hours. I will need to "report" to work at 7:30am and work until 4:45pm - to some this might seem like a long day - but as a result I will be getting EVERY SINGLE MONDAY OFF!!! Can you believe that? I will be having a 4 day work week… And I live around the corner from my new workplace so I will be saving time (and money) by not taking the bus.

I really think '08 is going to be HamiHarri's year - and I can't wait for it to get started!!!

It Was Another Lovely Weekend…

Patrick and I celebrated our 8th year together on Saturday…yes, 8 years! It feels like it was just yesterday when we laid eyes on each other in high school…*sigh

Saturday was a great day for us, it was not only our anniversary, but we discovered that our foundations had been laid at our new house site - yippee! What a great surprise. We knew they'd be doing some work in December, but we didn't know when, or to what extent…it was verrry exciting! Here is a picture:

We also finished our Christmas shopping (Meg, your was the last present we got - yippee! It feels great to be done because the malls are insane!).

I also picked up a copy of Lonely Planet's "Paris" and "Rome" guidebooks. I won't be travelling to Europe until '09 or '10, but I figured I better figure out what I'd like to see and do, and how much it is going to cost - from what I've discovered, I'm going to need those couple of years to save for this trip ;)

A Lesson On How To Be A Gracious Bride…

That is kind of what I felt like yesterday was, a lesson on how to be a gracious bride…and after re-reading yesturday's post, I think I failed it a little. LOL Isn't there a book or something I can read called "How To Be A Gracious Bride" - if any other brides out there have a copy of it, feel free to be "gracious" and send it my way ;)

As of right now I have decided to be gracious and stop worrying about things that might/might not happen as a result for all these weddings so close together… Heck, I might even get to partake in some of my new cousins wedding festivities as a result :)

THE GRACIOUS BRIDE

by Declan Tobin

The key to being a gracious bride is to be genuine, thoughtful and courteous if you can pull this off making sure you have a good time as well as everyone else the day should be memorable.

The mixture of personalities from crazy aunt Martha to your best friends new artist boyfriend and your husbands Architect boss make weddings difficult to pull off and wonderfully fun at the same time. So apart from turning into the 1950s hostess of charm how do you make it work.

Be yourself and don’t struggle to impress people, a party can be simple or elaborate but its graciousness is clearly reflected through its genuineness. Think of all the little things that make everyone comfortable. Leave your favorite scented soap in the guest’s room, a pitcher of lemonade and some home made cookies for the stressed out guest who has traveled miles to get to the venue. The more personal touches you add to the party the closer and more relaxed the guest will feel towards you, it will become more intimate rather than a formal affair.

Set out your favorite flowers around the venue, don’t be afraid to lay out your local hometown recipies if you’re from the south why not lay out some southern fried chicken and cornbread.

Incorporate humor into the day by being creative with your table names, why not seat all your girlfriends at the “sex and the city” table or your work colleagues at “The Office” table this can be an icebreaker for the guests sitting together. Another good idea is to use baby photos of yourself and the groom as seating cards with each guests name on the back this will remind the guest throughout the evening the name of the people they are sitting beside, lets face it that first introduction never sticks in your mind.

Making sure you are having a good time as well as your guests is a priority . It is difficult to look after all the guests and still have time to relax and enjoy the evening. This can be achieved by delegation. Ask your best friend and family members to help out with your concerns, why not ask your brother to look out for an elderly relative who will need assistance occasionally, your friend can assists with an out of town guest who will need help with directions.

To encourage mingling plan an activity. Mary Cleaver a New York caterer, who specializes in organic foods, tells of one wedding where a Polaroid camera was set up on a tripod so guests could take pictures of themselves and write something for the album. Or maybe do some funny characters of the gusts and have them as placement cards, which can double as favors this, can lighten the atmosphere and stimulate conversation. You can do some strategic seat planning and sit maybe an artist next to an accountant and so on to create diverse couples and spark conversation. It’s important to mix the guests up a bit and to combine different families and different age groups.

Allow your self at least a week to arrange the seating plan, it’s a good idea to make a seating chart comprising of large circles representing each table add pink and blue tags to easily distinguish between the male and female guests making sure they are evenly mixed throughout. These tags can have a few details about the guest on the back and the tags can be moved around each time you change your mind.
These seating arrangements should be carefully thought through between you and your fiancé to make sure everyone has the best possible seating partners and the dynamics of the area are correct setting for fun and a stimulating atmosphere.
You will need to consider if you are going to place husbands and wives at the same table, at sophisticated parties they are always seated separately and if you are going to keep the bridal party together or split them up. Use your own initiative on this one but don’t be afraid to mix you want people to meet each other and for both families to integrate.

It is a good idea to set aside a lounging area separate to the dinning room, this will cater for older guests that will be retiring from the festivities slightly earlier, it will also give other guests a break from their table allowing them to chat to each other over tea or coffee and get away from the music for a while if desired. Make sure this area has plenty of comfortable couches and that the speakers are turned away from this direction.

The success of a great wedding comes from all the thought and detail that goes into it, from the small welcoming gifts, an efficient coat check, the quality of the food, the beauty of the room and flowers, to the lulling music but more importantly what will be remembered is the friendly atmosphere and warm welcome received from the bride and groom. It is the giving of yourself that makes a gracious bride.

Three Weddings & A Sad Bride...

So, we just found out that there will be three (count 'em - 3!) Harris weddings in the span of a couple of weeks (one the week before ours, also when the Bridal Shower(s) and Bachelor Party is set to be - which we can't change as we are only able to fly in the week before because we live on the other side of the country and flights are $$$!)

I'm kinda sad…I know I don't "own" June and anyone can get married any time they like - but I'm still sad...a heads up would have been nice. Patrick and I have been planning our "Big Day" for over a year and a half. We are incredibly excited to be starting our lives together and committing ourselves to one another in front of God and our beloved family and friends…nothing will change that - but right now I am just sad…

It may be selfish to be so upset - especially when there is so much more in the world to be concerned about, and so much to be happy, thankful and excited about - but I don't care, I feel like being selfish :p

The Pacific Dogwood

One of the many things we learned during our meeting at the design center regarding our new home, was what type of tree will be planted in our back yard!

The tree that will be planted is a Pacific Dogwood.

British Columbia’s pacific dogwood has large white flowers which bloom in April and May.

The pacific dogwood has also been British Columbia’s floral emblem since 1956 - which is kind of neat.

It is said to be one of the most "handsome" native ornamental trees on the Pacific Coast, with very showy flowers and fruit (which is edible, but bitter) and can be found on the southern coast and on Vancouver Island south of Port Hardy (and in our soon to be backyard ;p)

The pacific dogwood has had a variety of uses; some aboriginal people used the wood, which is fine-grained, hard and heavy, for bows and arrows. More recently, the Cowichan people on Vancouver Island made knitting needles from it.

The Straits Salish made a tanning agent from the bark. The Thompson people made dyes - deep brown from the bark, black when mixed with grand fir, and red from the roots.

The wood has been used for piano keys. Pacific dogwood varieties are attractive ornamentals in coastal gardens.

Neat, eh?!

Clap On...Clap Off...

Last night when I got home from work, Patrick unveiled a surprise he had for me. Apparently, when I was busy selling memory cards and digital photo frames, he was busy shopping for a:

CLAPPER!!!

LOL…you know "clap on…clap off" to activate your lights… He then proceeded to demonstrate it for me…to say the least I had a verrry good laugh. But you know what, it is also very cool and works pretty well.

It was a totally random thing for Patrick to do…but I loved it!
